Who we are – Let us introduce ourselves

Blending tradition and modernity

It all started with “Allgemeine bayerische Hopfenzeitung” (General Bavarian Hop Journal), the forebear of the meantime legendary Brauwelt.

Fachverlag Hans Carl was founded in 1861 by Johann Carl and is thus one of the oldest specialist publishers in Germany. It was the driving force behind the establishment of the German Brewers Association and is meantime in the sixth generation as a family-run business.

Fachverlag Hans Carl publishes specialist journals and books for the brewing and beverage sector. We are an information service provider and a medium for the whole sector, serving our customers worldwide in print, with books and journals, and online with various services, newsletters and our archives.

Our specialist journals

We offer a unique range of specialist journals for the whole brewing and beverage sector.

“BRAUWELT”, “
Brewing Science (Monatsschrift für Brauwissenschaft
)” and “getränke markt” are our flagships.

Brauwelt provides information for the global brewing community, it is published in five languages and read in more than 160 countries. It is known to 95% of its target group. “Brauwelt” serves as an indispensable source of information for decision-makers in the brewing and beverage industry worldwide.

“getränke markt” is the German trade journal for decision-makers in the beverage wholesale and retail trade. Set up in 1979, it is the longest established journal of its kind. Industrial caterers and gourmet gastronomy is another target group for this journal.

Since January 2007, the scientific brewing journal’s name has been changed to underline its international importance. The Fachverlag Hans Carl publication is now called “Brewing Science (Monatsschrift für Brauwissenschaft)”.
It serves as the scientific publication medium for the Brewing Faculties of the Weihenstephan Scientific Centre at the Technical University of Munich, the Research and Teaching Institute for Brewing (VLB) in Berlin, the Scientific Facility for Brewing in Munich, Veritas Laboratory in Zurich
, Doemens Academy in Graefelfing near Munich and the Wissenschaftsförderung der Dt. Brauwirtschaft/Wifö (Promotion of Science of the German Brewing Industry)
Scientific contributions from external researchers and research institutions are also published.
All submitted articles are subjected to a peer review system. Fachverlag Hans Carl can rely on both nationally and internationally renowned experts for that matter. The journal is published in English.
In addition to publication of scientific articles, readers are provided with an abstracting service
per e-mail newsletter providing synopses of relevant scientific contributions in other journals.

Our readers – everyone interested in scientific and research topics relating to the brewing industry. In addition to researchers from various institutions, this extends to technical managers of breweries both nationally and internationally, in particular executives in the areas of equipment, technology, quality assurance, research and development.

With a total of eight trade journals, including two association journals, Fachverlag Hans Carl covers all areas of brewing and beverages, from production to distribution, on to marketing. The various journals are directed towards all target groups involved with beer and beverages, from producers to the various sales intermediaries such as beverage wholesalers, retailers, the wholesale and catering trade.

Fachverlag Hans Carl has also a presence in the arts sector. “Kunstchronik” (Monthly Periodical for Science of Art, Museums and Preservation of Monuments and Historic Buildings) is the only monthly journal for history of arts in the German-speaking countries whose contents reflect pure scientific selection criteria.

Our book programme

Publication of textbooks is another one of our activities, in addition to technical journals, so that we can live up to our claim to be an information service provider.
Our co-operation with the European Brewery Convention (EBC) led to publication of a whole series of books exclusively in English. These combine pure science with practical applications and provide a treasure trove of technical-technological knowledge utilised all over the world. Through our Hans Carl specialist bookshop, we are in a position to procure and deliver all books and publications on beer and beverages worldwide, including fiction, in the shortest possible time.
The program of Verlag Hans Carl, reflecting the same expertise as Fachverlag Hans Carl, comprises hiking guides, illustrated books and also books on history and history of arts relating to the Franconia and Nuremberg region.
The portfolio is rounded off by a monthly calendar depicting beer-related subjects.
